New Features: Addition to Head & Body Tags, and Much More

This LightCMS release is packed with several exciting and useful features, including the ability to easily add code to different areas of a page on a site and page basis. This feature is also now available on the checkout page. Keep reading to learn more about this feature and the other exciting things this release contains.

Addition to Head, Body Header, and Body Footer

For quite some time, LightCMS has given you the option to easily include code such as Google Analytics tracking code or CSS in the <head> area of your LightCMS pages. You could do this at the site level and on a page by page basis. This release greatly expands on that feature by giving you the option to also add code to immediately after the opening <body> tag and to immediately before the closing </body> tag. When you use a combination of additions to <head> and <body> on the website settings and also on page settings, the result appears like this:

<head>
     …
     <!--WEBSITE HTML HEAD CODE-->
     <!--PAGE HTML HEAD CODE-->
</head>
<body>
     <!--WEBSITE BODY HEADER CODE-->
     <!--PAGE BODY HEADER CODE-->
     …
     <!--PAGE BODY FOOTER CODE-->
     <!--WEBSITE BODY FOOTER CODE-->
</body>

This greatly simplifies the process of adding code to specific areas of a page. Need to add Google Tag Manager Code to immediately after the opening <body> tag? Simply place it in the new Body Header field on the Website Settings Advanced tab.

Do you have special CSS in the HTML Head of the website settings, but need to override it on a specific page? Simply place the CSS override code in the HTML Head area on the Page Settings Advanced tab.

The Body Footer field on the website settings lets you add code to immediately before the closing <body> tag on the page. For example, add your AdRoll Re-Targeting code to the  Body Footer field on the Website Settings to include it immediately before the closing </body> tag on every page.

You get the idea. These new options greatly simplify the process of adding code to your pages The Store Checkout settings also lets you add code to the HTML head, body header, and body footer. Any code that you add to the checkout settings, is included on the checkout pages and on the Thank You page.

Quicker Access to Editing Template Code

Previously, editing template code was several clicks away from whatever page you were on. The page bar now includes a new Edit Template Code button that lets you quickly open the code editor.

Clicking the button, opens the code editor and displays the code for that page’s template.

New RSS Options and Improved Feed Validation

This release also brings expanded options to the Blog Elements RSS settings. Previously the only configuration option for RSS Feed was Alternative URL. Now you have several more options which help improve feed validation for services such as iTunes. These options include:

  • Language, the default is English, but you can choose from many others.
  • Category which lets you specify a category for the feed.
  • Explicit notification regarding the feed:
    • Yes-explicit
    • No-not explicit
    • Clean-a cleaned up version of explicit material
  • Enter more information about the feed in the Description field.
  • When Include the featured image in the RSS feed is checked, the featured image is included in the RSS feed.

One additional new option for RSS feeds is the RSS Cover Art. This lets you specify an image to use as cover art on services such as iTunes. The image file must be either be in .jpg or .png format. Image dimensions should be square with minimum dimensions of 300 x 300 pixels and Maximum dimensions of 3000 x 3000 pixels. The suggested size is 1400 x 1400 pixels or greater. To qualify for featured placement in iTunes, the dimensions must be 3000 x 3000 pixels. Learn more about featured image requirements here.

Now Streaming

As part of the RSS enhancements and improved RSS validation, the system now supports byte-range requests. This means the system now supports the ability to stream the most common audio and video formats. Previously, if a visitor clicked a link to an audio or video file on your site, the full audio or video file had to be fully downloaded before it could be played. Now when a visitor clicks a link to an audio or video file, the media begins to stream and there is no need to download the file.

New Responsive Design: Flex

As if everything listed above wasn’t awesome enough, how about we top it off with a new responsive design? A new theme, Flex is available in the Featured Designs section of the Gallery. Click the image below to see an expanded view of the theme.

You can also see it in action for yourself at designs.publishpath.com/flex.
